NCRC Stopping All Services Dec. 31

The North Coast Resource Center in Arcata notified the public today that they will be suspending their services as of December 31, 2011. The NCRC, which was formerly known as the Arcata Endeavor, provides essential services to homeless people and low income residents. Services that will be stopped include food boxes, showers, lunches, and mail. A staff member said that they were closing in order to reorganize. Lack of funding has been a severe problem for the NCRC for several years.

Sit-in Protest at Bank of America

About 35 occupy protesters staged a sit-in at the Arcata Bank of America today. They entered the bank shortly after 2 pm and sat down and chanted om. They left peacefully after police arrived. Prior to that, it was a confusing day for Occupy Arcata. The encampment at city hall fell apart. In the morning several campers took their tents down, which led others to do the same. Rumors spread that there had been a raid. As the encampment weakened, the city took advantage and pushed for more stuff to be removed. Little remained by afternoon. Protesters said that they would regroup and reorganize.

Police Give Occupy Arcata Eviction Notice

Arcata police chief Tom Chapman delivered a letter to Occupy Arcata today. The letter amounts to an eviction notice, and is like the ones in other cities that were given before a police raid. There is little doubt that APD is planning to raid the protest soon.

Community Shows Support for Occupy Arcata

After high profile evictions of occupy camps in New York, Eureka, Portland, Oakland, and other cities, members of the community in Arcata have come by to show their support for Occupy Arcata. Daniel Duncan of Small World Book Press brought a kiosk that he made. A man driving by shouted "Keep it going, they shut down New York". A family came and stood on the corner, waving and holding a sign that said "End Corporate Personhood!" A woman drove up and donated chocolate and nuts. And this was all in the short span of time that I was there earlier today.

For the last two days Occupy Arcata has marched in the downtown area to protest against large corporate banks. Protesters hope to march against banks every day at about noon. Occupiers chant "Banks got bailed out, we got sold out".

Bank Transfer Day

Today is Bank Transfer Day. The occupy movement is urging people to transfer their accounts from the big banks to local credit unions. Occupy Arcata is planning a march in observance. The local movement is still going strong at city hall. I am surprised at how many local shop owners have come by to express their support and drop off donations. A lot of the problems with disruptive persons has diminished, but their is still a need for more dedicated people that can maintain peacekeeper monitoring 24 hours a day.

City Council to Consider Supporting OWS

On the agenda for tomorrow night's meeting of the Arcata City Council is consideration of Resolution 112-26 - In Support of the Occupy Wall Street Movement. Occupy Arcata is urging citizens to come to the meeting, which starts at 6 pm. Public restrooms in the downtown area is also being discussed.

Today, after visits from city officials, the General Assembly of Occupy Arcata adopted a good neighbor policy and made other changes that should give the protest a different look and feel by tomorrow. The good neighbor policy will be like the one adopted in New York by Occupy Wall Street which reads as follows:

GOOD NEIGHBOR POLICY

Following respectful and good-faith dialogue with members of the local community which has been rebuilding since the trauma of 9/11, Occupy Wall Street hereby announces the following Good Neighbor Policy:

OWS has zero tolerance for drugs or alcohol anywhere in Liberty Plaza;

Zero tolerance for violence or verbal abuse towards anyone;

Zero tolerance for abuse of personal or public property.

OWS will limit drumming on the site to 2 hours per day, between the hours of 11am and 5pm only.

OWS encourages all participants to respect health and sanitary regulations, and will direct all participants to respectfully utilize appropriate off-site sanitary facilities.

OWS will display signage and have community relations and security monitors in Liberty Plaza, in order to ensure awareness of and respect for our guidelines and Good Neighbor Policy.

OWS will at all times have a community relations representative on-site, to monitor and respond to community concerns and complaints.

Two Arrests at Occupy Arcata

Two protesters were arrested today at the Occupy Arcata protest site. The trouble started when officers tried to give a ticket to a protester for having a tent. Police arrested him after he refused to sign the ticket. One other activist was also arrested for reasons that are not clear. Both were taken to Humboldt County Jail. Police took the one tent that was at the site. Now there are several tents. The police action seems to have galvanized the activists and brought more community support. Occupy Protesters Do Short Sit-ins at Two Arcata Banks

Early this afternoon protesters from Occupy Humboldt staged short sit-ins at the Chase Bank on 7th Street and at Wells Fargo Bank on G Street in Arcata. The activists sat on the floor and meditated for five to ten minutes, then got up and left before police arrived. Police caught up to them on G Street and talked to them for awhile. I'm not sure what was said.

Arcata Mayor and Councilman Support Occupy Movement

Arcata Mayor Susan Ornelas and Councilmember Shane Brinton came to the plaza yesterday, to show their support for Occupy Wall Street and the local Occupy movement. The two city officials joined dozens of activists who gathered on the plaza and marched around town. Mayor Ornelas said she was one of the ninety-nine percent. Activists from Occupy Humboldt circulated a petition to HSU President Rollin Richmond asking that the University allow the Occupy protest on campus to continue. They passed out flyers that claimed "CSU administrators are threatening to suspend students and eject protesters for participating in the Occupy movement". Occupy Humboldt is calling for as many supporters as possible to come to the protest site on Sunday.

Fear of nuclear fallout from Japan's nuclear meltdown crisis is causing panic buying of iodine pills, kelp and seaweed in Arcata. The North Coast Co-op struggling to meet the demand of customers looking for products that will help protect against radiation poisoning. some of my friends have recommended taking kelp, seaweed, and leafy greens to mitigate the danger. The Co-op was restocking their kelp pills this morning, but was out of iodine pills that customers keep asking for.

All Assistance for the Homeless to End

Staff members at the North Coast Resource Center informed their clients today, that all services for the homeless will be stopped due to lack of funding. There will be no more showers for seniors and disabled, no more mail services and case management. Also after two more community lunches next week, there will be no more lunches. It seems the only service that will still be provided is food boxes for housed people that can show proof of residence. Previously the NCRC (still known to many as The Endeavor) had indicated that the lunch program would be expanded from two days a week to three, starting with the new fiscal year in July. Apparently the expected funding did not come through, and now the most needy will be left with nothing. Years ago, when they first opened, they served lunch five days a week and offered shower and laundry services to all those who were in need.

420 Fest in Redwood Park

The turnout was smaller, due to rain, at this year's annual celebration of cannabis culture. Police and the City Manager seemed to do more to discourage the unpermited festival than in previous years, but it was the steady rain all day that kept the attendance down. Still, the people that showed up seemed to be enjoying the event.

Council Passes Anti-panhandling Ordinance

Last night the Arcata City Council approved an extreme anti-panhandling ordinance despite unanimous opposition from all the members of the public that spoke at the packed meeting. Many in the audience suggested letting the voters decide. Some said Mayor Stillman should have recused herself. The vote was 3-2. A Facebook group against the measure, now has 50 members.

Tad Robinson, the well known homeless rights activist and local blogger, is entering the second week of a hunger strike. He went to jail last Sunday to serve out a 35 day sentence after an incident during public comment at the January 27 Humboldt County Board of Supervisors meeting. He started fasting on October 20 at the last Board of Supervisors meeting. Meanwhile some of his supporters are holding a 24 hour vigil for him on the Arcata Plaza.

Feds are Raiding in Humboldt

Numerous sources are confirming the rumors about drug raids in Humboldt by federal agents. The North Coast Journal has photos of them taken early this morning at the River Lodge in Fortuna. Eric Kirk has reports of them being in Redway. Early reports suggest that the feds are fanning out in every direction. The Humboldt Herald says they are also headed east on 299.

Third District Candidates Debate

Last night, candidates for Third District County Supervisor answered questions at the Veterans Memorial Building in Arcata. Candidates Mark Lovelace, Paul Pitino, and Bryan Plumley participated in the Forum that was sponsored by The Arcata Eye, KHSU, and the Arcata Chamber of Commerce. Lovelace raised the issues of integrity and consistency as an issue that ought to be addressed. Mark's campaign manager told me that the remark was an allusion to Plumley giving different responses depending on what group he was talking to. Pitino put emphasis on the issue of campaign finance reform, noting that he has refused to take contributions and endorsements, has not put up signs, and has spent only $200 so far. Plumley said that he might be the only solar powered stockbroker, but Lovelace noted that Bryan had nothing to do with the solar panels being installed on the building where Plumley's business is located. Lovelace and Pitino agreed on many issues whereas Plumley takes a more conservative, pro-growth position. The General plan update is an example with Mark and Paul favoring option A, and Bryan supporting option B. Among the topics covered were: trails, port development, climate change, jobs, HSU growth, and homelessness. To stop global warming Lovelace called for walkable communities, Pitano for a better bus system, and Plumley for green building standards. Letter Delivered to Bob Snyder

Sixty to seventy concerned students and community members delivered a letter to Bob Snyder, Provost of Academic Affairs at Humboldt State University. The letter expresses support for the reappointment of Dr. Manuel "Manolo" Callahan to a sixth year in the Ethnic Studies program at HSU. Supporters of Callahan believe his reappointment is in jeopardy because of political considerations. An email from activists says:

"We believe that due to his political work, inherent in the engaging, creative and challenging ways he teaches Ethnic Studies, Manolo is being racially and politically profiled. Manolo consistently provides support, insight, and empowerment to students of color and other marginalized community. He is a source of significant resources and inspiration, playing an important role as mentor, strategist, and comrade. He is active and inspiring both on campus and in the larger community, facilitating seminars and events for a wide range of groups to learn, connect, share, and actualize our collective strengths.

His political and community engagement on and off campus transcend "classroom teaching" reinforcing local, state, national, and transnational struggles for dignity. While HSU espouses "community service" Manolo's community activities – because they at times critique the role of HSU in perpetuating physical as well as symbolic violence - has been unjustly treated by some of his colleagues and administrators at HSU as a threat. Because of this, the HSU administration tries to undermine Manolo's authority as a scholar on race.

We will not remain silent about this bureaucratic attack that threatens Manolo's future and the critical work he does in our communities."

Bomb Scare Update

A large area of the campus is still closed off. Several Sheriff's deputies have arrived on the scene. I heard that two suspicious packages were found taped in two buildings with some kind of written message threatening destruction. Because it is finals week, the bomb scare is causing considerable disruption.

I am at HSU right now where 8 or 9 buildings are closed due to a bomb threat and many finals canceled. Meanwhile over 60 students and community members are crowded into the President's office trying to deliver a letter in support of an ethnic studies teacher. I'll post more soon.

Green Presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney spoke tonight at the Kate Buchanan Room at HSU. The former Congressperson spoke about her recent experiences in Mexico, globalization, electoral fraud, and the shortcomings of the corporate media. McKinney said "We have to go outside of the corporate media to inform ourselves." She said that by controlling the information people receive, the corporate media controls the way we vote and therefore controls the public policy results. McKinney served six terms in Congress as a representative from Georgia. Also speaking at the event were Carol Wolman, Green candidate for Congress in the First District, and Paul Pitino, Green candidate for County Supervisor in the Third District.

Today, a series of protests began with Arcata Food Not Bombs serving a vegan meal on the Plaza. They were soon joined by the Infernal Noise Brigade creating various sounds of disruption. Members of the Industrial Workers of the World bicycled in a critical mass to Sun Valley Floral Farm and then to Burger King in Eureka. At the same time, the Infernal Noise Brigade marched from the Plaza to the HSU Quad where they met up with Humboldt United Students Against Sweatshops (HUSAS) . Together, they then marched up to President Rollin Richmond's office to deliver a petition demanding no more sweatshop labor products at HSU. Raging Grannies at Tax Day Protest

At a tax day action at the Arcata Post Office today, the Raging Grannies sang and activists from the Redwood Peace and Justice Center conducted a penny poll. Literature from the War Resisters League was handed out. The activists seek to make the pulic aware of how much of their income tax money goes to the military. According to the War Resisters League that figure is 54% or $1,449 billion.

I hear this morning that the police may be getting ready to raid an encampment in the Community Forest. The encampment was apparently inspired by last year's People Project Encampment. People tell me that Kevin Hoover of the Arcata Eye was there taking pictures the other day. Also, in today's Eureka Reporter it was reported that the Endeavor is going to stop feeding meals to the needy unless they can show proof of residency and provide free labor for downtown businesses. The Endeavor keeps cutting services to appease right-wing fanatics that will never be appeased until all the poor and people that are different (Gypsies, gays, Jews) are put in concentration camps and killed. If the churches in Arcata are really Christian they will sever ties with Arcata Endeavor Inc. and develop an independent alternative to provide Christian charity for the poor like the scripture calls for.

City Council Votes to Kill Arcata Endeavor

Last night the Arcata City Council again voted to get rid of the Arcata Endeavor Service Center. In a two to two vote the council rejected a proposal to extend the endeavor's lease. The Endeavor needs the extension while they try to find a new site. Finding a new site location has been impossible because of extreme NIMBYism in Arcata.

Tree-sit Raided : Base Camp at Grizzly

The Spooner Tree-sit was raided in the last couple of days and PL climber Eric Shatz was seen there yesterday. Much of the sitter's gear and supplies have been taken. Grizzly Creek State Park has been announced as the location for the Action Camp that starts tomorrow. Help is needed to defend this huge ancient redwood tree and the grove around it. Forest Defense Action/ Base Camp Coming to SoHum

A direct action/base camp will be taking place September 6th-10th. The location will probably be somewhere in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Non-Violence, Solidarity, Backwoods and Climbing trainings will be offered. The camp is free, but donations are needed and appreciated. The focus of the camp is to prepare activists to be effective in non-violent forms of direct action, and to support the tree-sits in Fern Gully ( in Freshwater ) and Nanning Creek ( near Scotia ). Veterans Attend North Coast Stand Down

Over the weekend, veterans from Humboldt and Del Norte Counties gathered at the fairgrounds in Ferndale for the Second Annual North Coast Stand Down. There was a lot of free services, food and music for veterans and their families. Army surplus gear was given away to homeless vets. According to the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs, one out of every three homeless adult males is a veteran and on any given night, more than 500,000 veterans are homeless.

From reports I heard from activists that talked to police today, it seems that the City of Arcata is depending on vigilantes to prevent free speech and protest in Arcata. A culture of support for vigilantism seems to flourish in Humboldt County, thanks to the silence of the community and clergy. This is certainly what must have happened in Germany that allowed Hitler to come to power. Perhaps Mayor Harmony Groves is depending on KKK style vigilantes to come with a "final solution" to the "homeless problem".

People Project to Rally and March Tomorrow

The People Project will be breaking down their encampment at 14th & Union tomorrow morning in preparation for a rally in the afternoon. After the rally, protesters will begin a march that will end at City Hall, where many of them plan to speak to the City Council at their regularly scheduled Wednesday meeting. The People Project is demanding an end to the criminalization to homelessness and the return of their property that was taken in last Wednesday's raid. Activists also plan to raise concerns about police conduct during the raid. The People Project is also planning to hold a press conference on Thursday. The People Project protest encampment was reestablished yesterday afternoon at 14th & Union Streets in Arcata, at the entrance to Redwood Park. Police have been coming by frequently, warning of possible citations or arrests, shining spotlights and filming. They came at about 2:30am and 4:30am, making sleep difficult. Protest Encampment Continues at City Hall

The People Project encampment that began last Saturday is still going strong but has moved to the lawn in front of The Arcata City Hall, where they intend to stay until the city gives back the property siezed by the police in Wednesday's raid. Citizens have been extremely generous and supportive. Ten pizza's were just delivered to the camp. The city's press release says citizens are angry and complaining about the camp. I see more that are angry at the city and Mayor Groves. I hope they hold her accountable if she runs for re-election. The city's press release states that on April 23the police warned the group of a violation and told them to vacate by sunset. This is a complete lie. I was there and never heard anything of it. I still can't find anyone who was told anything like that. The whole document is full of blatant lies. Mayor Harmony Groves should find out who is responsible and fire them. If not citizens should demand that the mayor resign. How can any citizen ever believe anything the city says again?
